SOS Thanks You!

The German Shepherd Dog is well known for their intelligence, loyalty and willingness to serve mankind.  For a century GSDs have stood by our side, serving as police officers, as guide dogs, in the military, in customs, on search & rescue teams, as herding dogs and as our protectors.  By far their most important job of all: best friend to their humans.    Perhaps more than any other breed, the German Shepherd has eagerly worked for and loved mankind. We at SOS German Shepherd Rescue feel it is only right that we return their devotion, repay their loyalty, and do all we can for them in their hour of need.

In shelters all over the Midsouth, German Shepherd Dogs are at risk of being put to death due to space considerations.  The problem is there are just TOO MANY HOMELESS DOGS and not enough adoptions.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

The SOS Mission

Save Our Shepherds Rescue is an all volunteer non-profit pet rescue organization for German Shepherd Dogs. We are funded by adoption fees and the occasional private donation, but the majority of our funds come from our own pockets.

Our Mission is to find loving forever homes for adoptable German Shepherd Dogs rescued from shelters, strays and owner turn-ins. We provide needed medical care, training and rehabilitation to neglected, abused or sick German Shepherd Dogs until they are ready for adoption. All SOS dogs are spayed/neutered prior to adoption, micro-chipped, brought up-to-date on all vaccinations, and heartworm tested.

We are dedicated to helping our adoptable animals find good homes where they will be safe, well cared for and loved for the rest of their lives. Caring for these animals allows us to learn more about their personalities and helps us to place them in a home best suited for them.

Our goals include:

  • Lower the number of unnecessary euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets.
  • Inform and educate about responsible humane treatment of animals and the importance of spay/neuter procedures.
  • Educate about the need for monthly heartworm preventative.
  • Bring attention to the plight of shelter pets in animal control facilities.
  • Provide needed veterinary care.
  • Provide socialization skills and basic manners to otherwise adoptable pets.
  • Screen potential adopters with home visits and vet/reference checks.
  • Provide good adoptable GSDs to adopters who will treasure their new dog as a member of the family.
  • Watch all dogs and animals realated movies on showbox by downloading showbox for free online. If you want to get showbox just get here : showbox app

 Your Donation Will Save Lives

Veterinary expenses for the dogs we save frequently exceed incoming adoption fees.

Have A Heart - Support SOS Spay/Neuter, Vaccinations, Antibiotics, Flea/Tick Prevention and Heartworm Preventatives are just the normal expenditures. And of course our food bills really add up.

Many of the dogs that come into our program are heartworm positive.  While many shelters automatically euthanize these dogs simply because treatment is so expensive, at our rescue we invest the time and money to treat these dogs who go on to live long, healthy, happy lives.

We need foster homes for a few good dogs.Contact SOS German Shepherd Rescue if you'd like to get involved.

We need temporary Foster Homes, periodic assistance with transport, donations to help with medical expenses that too frequently exceed incoming adoption fees, and general assistance getting the word out.

Please talk to your friends, neighbors and co-workers.  Tell them that there is no need to breed or to buy when so many good dogs are needlessly slaughtered due to pet overpopulation.  Please Spay and Neuter Your Pets.  Rather Than Breed or Shop, Please Adopt!

Owner Surrender Policy

We are a foster-home-based rescue that tries to first save those dogs at risk in local shelters.  However, we can help you re-home a german shepherd in need by offering a courtesy post on Petfinder. (The dog must MEET OUR REQUIREMENTS - be spayed/neutered and have a sound temperament.)

If you are willing to continue caring for your pet (or a stray) until a suitable new home can be found, see Owner Surrender. Please DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. These things take time but we'd be happy to help if we can. It is preferable to seeing good dogs be unnecessarily put down in the shelters.

Can You Provide Temporary Foster Care? Please support breed rescue. If you don't adopt from us...adopt elsewhere. ADOPT rather than SHOP!

All our foster homes are currently full but with each new foster home we can add to our network at least one life is saved.

If you feel you can provide a safe loving temporary home for a GSD until an approved forever home can be found, please let us know by completing our Foster Home Questionnaire.

Lets get the good dogs that just need a bit of TLC out of the shelters

Why Are There So Many Homeless GSDs?
Click Here To Read More Frequently Asked Questions

Most of the GSDs we rescue from shelters have not been taken care of emotionally or physically but the most common reason that they have ended up in shelters is that their people simply didn't care enough;  Did not care enough to properly ensure their safety with secure fencing, to make sure they had  ID tags or were micro chipped in case they got lost, Did not care enough to protect them from preventable illness, Did not care enough to provide the structure and training to avoid behavioral  problems, Did not care enough to simply bring them in the house, talk to them occasionally and tell them that they were loved.

These wonderful dogs need us.  They need you! All they desire is a bit of TLC and to be Too many good dogs and not enough adoptions part of a family, not thrown out in the yard and left alone.  He or she is your new best friend, not to be abandoned or neglected, but to be loved and treasured.  We at Save Our Shepherds GSD Rescue want to help you form that special bond with your new family member so that soon you will be telling others where you found the best canine companion you've ever had.

Please Help Us Help Them

If we all help save just one...we can work miracles!
